The world consumes ~100 million barrels of crude oil every day. As of early 2026, there are ~1.73 trillion barrels of proven and can be recoverable crude oil reserves available on earth. ~35 billion barrels of crude oil is extracted from these reserves every year i.e ~2% of crude oil is extracted from these proven reserves every year. If we extract at this rate and no new reserves are found in the future, in next 50 years, there will be no oil left on the earth. In this post, we will see 10 largest crude oil reserves on earth as of now, their quality, their extraction rate and their remaining life span.
10 Largest Crude Oil Reserves On Earth :
1) Venezuela | ~300 Billion Barrels | 18% Of The World
Venezuela has the most crude oil reserves on earth with ~300 Billion Barrels of proven crude oil reserves that can be recoverable with present available technology. That is approximately 18% of total oil present on earth. 75% of these reserves are located in Orinoco Belt. Venezuelan oil is very thick and have high density which often requires heating or other chemical diluents to move through pipeline. It is also high on sulphur and other chemicals like Vanadium which makes it more expensive to refine into petrol or diesel than Saudi or US oil. Despite having the most reserves on earth, Venezuela extracts only ~0.3 Billion barrels of crude oil every year i.e ~0.1% of the reserves every year. This is very low compared to countries like US or Russia which have >5% of annual extraction rate. If they extract at this rate, they will have oil for another 500+ years.
| Recoverable Reserves | ~300 Billion Barrels |
| Quality Of Oil | Low |
| Annual Production | ~0.3 Billion Barrels |
| Annual Extraction Rate | 0.1% |
| Years Of Oil Left | 500+ Years |
2) Saudi Arabia | ~267 Billion Barrels | 15% Of The World
Saudi Arabia has second most recoverable crude oil reserves on earth with ~267 Billion Barrels. It is approximately 15% of total current oil reserves on earth. Reserves of Saudi Arabia are very sweet. It is very easy and less expensive to extract and refine oil from these reserves. Majority of this oil is managed by state owned company Saudi Aramco. Saudi Arabia adjusts annual production according to global market needs. On an average, it pulls out ~3.6 Billion Barrels of oil from its reserves every year i.e ~1.4% of its reserve every year. If Saudi Arabia goes at this rate and no new oil reserves are found, present oil reserves are sufficient for another ~70 years.
| Recoverable Reserves | ~267 Billion Barrels |
| Quality Of Oil | High |
| Annual Production | ~3.6 Billion Barrels |
| Annual Extraction Rate | ~1.4% |
| Years Of Oil Left | ~70 Years |
3) Iran | ~209 Billion Barrels | 11% Of The World
Iran has ~209 Billion Barrels of recoverable crude oil reserves, third most on earth. It is approximately 11% of total oil reserves on earth. It is managed by the state-owned National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC). Iranian oil is medium in quality. Iran extracts ~1.4 Billion Barrels of crude oil from its reserves. i.e 0.6% of total reserves every year. It is very low compared to available reserves because of sanctions on Iranian oil in the global market. If they extract at this rate and no new reserves are found, current oil will last for another ~150 years.
| Recoverable Reserves | ~209 Billion Barrels |
| Quality Of Oil | Medium |
| Annual Production | ~1.4 Billion Barrels |
| Annual Extraction Rate | 0.6% |
| Years Of Oil Left | ~150 Years |
4) Canada | ~170 Billion Barrels | 10% Of The World
Canada is 4th largest crude oil reserves on earth. But most of these reserves are in the form of oil sands. Oil sands doesn’t contain oil in liquid form. They are the mixture of sand, water and thick clay-like oil, Making it hard and expensive to extract. Canada has ~170 Billion Barrels of crude oil reserves in the form of such oil sands which is almost 10% of total oil reserves on earth. They extract ~2.1 Billion Barrels of oil from their reserve every year. i.e approximately 1.2% of reserves every year. They almost spend $30 to extract one barrel of oil from such oil sands. If crude oil price crashes in the global market, extraction of oil from oil sands is not considered profitable.
| Recoverable Reserves | ~170 Billion Barrels |
| Quality Of Oil | Low |
| Annual Production | ~2.1 Billion Barrels |
| Annual Extraction Rate | 1.2% |
| Years Of Oil Left | ~80 Years |
5) Iraq | ~145 Billion Barrels | 9% Of The World
Next is the Iraq which has ~145 Billion Barrels of crude oil reserves. It is 9% of total oil reserves on earth. Iraqi oil reserves are very sweet like Saudi oil, very easy to refine and less expensive to extract. Iraq economy is heavily dependent on oil which accounts for 90% of government’s revenue. At present, Iraq extracts ~1.6 Billion Barrels of oil from their reserve. i.e annual extraction rate at 1.1% which is considered moderate in the global oil market. If they continue at this rate, they still have ~90 years of oil left in their reserves.
| Recoverable Reserves | ~145 Billion Barrels |
| Quality Of Oil | High |
| Annual Production | ~1.6 Billion Barrels |
| Annual Extraction Rate | ~1.1% |
| Years Of Oil Left | ~90 Years |
6) UAE | ~113 Billion Barrels | 7% Of The World
UAE, with ~113 Billion Barrels of crude oil reserves, comes 6th in the list. It is almost 7% of total oil reserves on earth. Nature of UAE oil reserves is same as of Saudi Arabia and Iraq, very sweet for refineries as well as profitable. 95% of these reserves are located in Abu Dhabi and are managed by the state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). They pull out ~1.3 Billion Barrels of oil every year from these reserves making it moderate annual extraction rate at ~1.2%. If they continue at this rate, current reserves are sufficient for another 80+ years.
| Recoverable Reserves | ~113 Billion Barrels |
| Quality Of Oil | High |
| Annual Production | ~1.3 Billion Barrels |
| Annual Extraction Rate | ~1.2% |
| Years Of Oil Left | ~80+ Years |
7) Kuwait | ~102 Billion Barrels | 5% Of The World
Kuwait has ~102 Billion Barrels of crude oil reserves and comes 7th in the list of top crude oil reserves on earth. It is 5% of total reserves on earth. Quality of these reserves is very high and there is a high demand for Kuwait oil in the global oil market. They extract ~1 Billion Barrels of crude oil every year. It is almost 1% of the reserves every year. If they pull out at this rate, they still have ~95+ years of oil left in their reserves.
| Recoverable Reserves | ~102 Billion Barrels |

Russia comes next with ~80 Billion Barrels of crude oil reserves. It is just 4% of total reserves on earth. The quality of reserves is of medium standard. They have very high extraction rate. They almost pump out ~3.9 billion barrels of crude oil every year i.e ~4.8% of their reserves every year. If they continue at this rate and no new oil reserves are found in the future, they will finish their reserves in next ~20 years.
| Recoverable Reserves | ~80 Billion Barrels |

| Annual Production | ~3.9 Billion Barrels |
| Annual Extraction Rate | ~4.8% |
| Years Of Oil Left | ~20 Years |
9) Libya | ~48 Billion Barrels | 2.5% Of The World
Libya has ~48 Billion Barrels of crude oil reserves but less utilized because of political instability. It is almost 2.5% of the total reserves on earth. Quality of oil is high but they don’t have infrastructure to pump out oil from their reserve. They extract less than 1% of their crude oil reserve every year. It is ~0.44 Billion Barrels every year. If they continue at this rate, oil reserves will last for another 100 years.
